I began practicing Ashtanga whilst in my teens and fell in love with the fast pace and strong demands on the body. I found the constant stoking of the internal fire exhilarating but now my practice has evolved into a more responsive style, allowing for a little more intuitive self-expression. Mostly when I arrive on my mat I allow my body to guide me. I love anatomy and figuring out how the body works so my teaching is often a curious blend of spirituality, science, and playful sequencing. Ultimately I’m interested in guiding students to listen inwards rather than dictating a shape.
This emphasis on the cultivation of awareness has become ever more central to my teaching since journeying to motherhood. During pregnancy, I learned how to really honour and listen to my body. This has been a great gift of self-discovery as I continue to be attuned to my needs in my practice. I believe that we need all the support we can get to maintain this awareness. Many factors will distract us from Mother Nature’s guidance but practicing yoga as connection to self, connection to baby and simply keeping fit and strong can provide us with the tools we need to maximise our chances of having an empowered, positive birth experience. This is my focus in my pregnancy classes.
As well as yoga and my daughter, the other love of my life is food! I have been running a restaurant called Poco in Bristol with my business partners, Tom Hunt, and Ben Pryor, for the past 12 years. This business is very much an expression of our love for bringing people together through food while celebrating the seasons, respecting the earth, and connecting directly to the people responsible for growing and producing our food. I grow a very humble amount of food for the restaurant on my allotment in St Werburghs and it’s on this spot (as well as my mat) where everything makes sense. When my hands are in the soil and I’m in service to others, I’m happy.
Eighteen years of practice and still learning (and unlearning)…
This learning journey never ends and I’m dedicated to constantly improving my knowledge and experience with self-study and the guidance of incredible teachers to whom I’m so thankful.
